William, this depends on whether your copy of openOffice has been made accessible. Can you load and read documents with it already? If not, you have a slight problem, though it can be fixed. Please note that this is nothing to do with the format of the document.
There is a page on the NVDA site that gives you chapter and verse about OpenOffice accessibility.
