No-one has mentioned the Plextalk PTR2 yet and I would not be without mine. It can also produce in wav which I use for a lot of projects for obvious reasons. Given that it is designed for the visually impaired, every single option, of which there are many, has a spoken prompt including the record level and battery indicator. Strictly speaking, it is a daisy recorder, but as well as the fact that daisy can be an advantage in some situations, you can easily take the files out of there onto your computer for further editing, although the PTR2 has a full suite of on the fly (or post recording) editing facilities.
I don't want to get into a debate about whether the PTR2 is better than the edirol recorders, because apart from it being written about to death on the list it's a boring subject. Steve. I have seen a couple of people mention that there is an external microphone you can get for the Edirol. I think I saw someone say that it is specially balanced so as to get rid of the hiss from the pre amp - whatever that means.

Hi Ray,

It will probably be heavier though, if you start plugging XLRs into it.
Also it only supports MP3 up to 192. Why do these manufacturers keep making silly compromises like this? The Edirol supports 320, so it is still more flexible in the MP3 department, even though the encoder is not the best I have seen. SWF support is good though, but I wouldn't mind betting that it will be more difficult to use than the Edirol. The nice thing about the 
Edirol is that the menus don't wrap.

Damon, I've no direct experience with the Edirol R09 but the reviews
I've heard on Blindcooltech don't suggest, to me at least, that the
mic pre-amp hiss is that bad.  I keep hearing people around that list
mention an AT stereo mic as being a good partner for the R09.

Perhaps Steve Nutt, who's a keen advocate of the R09 will enlighten
you further on this aspect of things.  There's plenty on the net to,

I must say though that the recently introduced, and more expensive
Fostex FR2 LE sounds as though it might be the obvious choice now for
portable digital recorders below £400.00, though I've seen no reviews
yet from a blind or VI persons standpoint.  This recorder  though is
more professionally oriented with its XLR mic inputs.  Certainly hope
it gets a review soon.  It supports both .wav, and .BWF formats, plus
MP3 at 192kbs, as well as 24bit depth recording.

I'm looking at getting a solid state recorder to make high quality
recordings.  Have been looking at the Edirol R09 online.

I gather there are some background hiss problems.

How bad is this hissing? And can it be eliminated by using an external
mike? And does Hagger sell such a mike?

Phil, welcome back.

I think the Edirol R09 should be the ticket for you here.  Its down in
price now to around £250.00.  A lot of retailers selling it including
Studiospares, Dolphin Audio and inquitaudio, to name a few.

Be interesting to see if anyone else comes up with alternatives to the
R09.

Been off list for quite a while now so lost touch a bit with what's
happening, good to be back and see the list is as active as ever!

After some suggestions for a hardware mp3 player / recorder that I can
use to give to my personal reader to record audio onto and then for me
to quickly
& easily dump onto my hard drive for storage & playing back on my
bookcourier / pc.  It doesn't necessarily have to be fully accessible
for me as it will
be used by a sighted person but it must be easily syncable with my pcc
and be able to record up to record / store up to 5 hrs worth of mp3 at
a time.

I already have a plexter ptr2 which is great but I don't want to give
this to my reader to take away and leave me without the rest of the
time.

I do have an old Olympus dm1 recorder but I've never found it easy to
sync and get files off and if my memory servies me right (which is no
guarantee!)
it tends to default to recording in WAV format.

Anyway your suggestions greatly appreciated.
