Phil, glad you are making good progress with your portable MP3
recorder searches.

One thing does strike me though, namely, making sure you have
recorders with the same sort of card. Remember that if you have a
Plextor PTR, which I think you said you had, then it is not going to
be easy to take the card out of the dictation machine and put it into
the PTR, if this indeed is what you are intending to do.

Of course, USB connectivity would mean easy transfer to a PC which of
course is very convenient.

Do keep us updated though about these recorders you're investigating.
My interest is their possible use by ordinary, non-techy people for
recording reminiscence and aural history interviews, and where cost
isn't in the semi-pro or pro bracket.

Cheers,

Hi Terry,

Yeah I thought that was the case.

Have a quick google on mp3 recorders and have found a company that
specialise in digital dictation devices. Have spoken with a very
helpful
person there who has recommended 2 devices, 1 a Sanyo mp3 recorder and
a
philips device which has USB 2 connectivity. Both look the sort of
thing
I'm after at a reasonable price. The only question I have is whether
I
would be forced to use the specific sanyo / philips software interface
to
take off the files or whether I could just use windows explorer - I
had this
problem with my Olympus dm1.

This is the link to the info on the philips machine, anyone out there
used
this or similar device and if so any feedback on usage of the download
software with jaws?

Yes I know I myself may struggle to use the machine but I have other
things
such as my bookcourier which I want to play the files back on and want
this
to be what I give my reader to take away and read onto and all I want
to be
able to do is extract the recorded files.

Apols if this is getting a bit technical but hey that's what this list
is
for!!

I await your feedback!!

Cheers,

Phil
