hi hazel,

it's actually nothing to do with the food labelling, it's more to do with
what's in foods that are not labelled or contain substances that don't have
to be put on labels.
so for example my wife has a kidney condition and this means that she
should restrict how much phosphorus she eats, but in this country
phosphorus is a substance that manufacturers are not obliged to put on the
label by law.
and the hospital tell us that for example supermarkets will often label
ready meals and other products as reduced or low in salt supposedly as a
healthy option but infact they replace the salt with phosphorus which also
acts as a preservitive.
so for people who have to avoid certain things because of allergies
or medical conditions this machine would be invaluable especially when
eating out as fresh food doesn't have to be labelled and often if you ask
if a food contains something the people act as if your talking in a foreign
language.

pete.
