Hi Derek,

Basically, you can buy a mobile in any of the following ways.

Contract with sim.
Pay as you go with sim

Both these methods you will find that the phone is locked to that one
particular provider, not the sim. That means that if you buy a vodafone pay as
you go phone, though it will be locked to vodafone, you can use any other voda
sim be it from a contract or from an earlier pay as you go handset. Some of
the voda contract phones used to come unlocked, not sure if any do now but my
last 6680 was locked to voda but for around £20 to £30, they will unlock it for
you.

Above was for a new phone, you could try second hand. Also, you can buy phones
sim free which means they are unlocked to any network and do not come with a
sim. It's also the most expensive way to get a phone as providers do not
subsidise the phone.

Remember though that if you have a contract phone, you can get a new upgraded
handset generally every 12 to 18 months. There will be a small upgrade charge
depending on the phone you are upgrading to.

Hope that helps.

Steve

  Subject: [access-uk] mobile phone handsets

  Hi all
Does anyone know do all new mobile phone handsets always come with
a Sim as part of the package?
I am aware of course that provided the handset isn't locked into
one telephone service, one can use any SIM in the handset.

Point is, one may w a new handset only because old one is faulty,
so in a case like that one would just switch SIMS!
So I am just wondering why do so many new handsets still come with
a SIM whenone may not even use the one in the box.

  Regards,
  Derek
