Problem solved.  shift and enter cures it on three sites that I have had
trouble with.

It sounds to me that you have got some sort of popup blocker in operation.
If for instance you have either the google or yahoo toolbars this will
happen when the link you are trying to access opens in a new brouser window.
If you try to access one of these links and you hear the click you
described, hold down the shift key and press enter and you will be able to
access the link.
