No, there is no start menu. Control-Option d will give you access to the apps.
In order to read a document from the Mac on a PC, from Pages you have to export
the document as a Word document. I’ll send you some tutorial-type documents.

hi, thanks for this, my mac arrived to day along with an ipod as i'm doing a
major clear out of my cd's as i'll have it all on the ipod with a back up.
i've so far noticed that there are cursor keys which i assume i use in the
same way as i would on a pc

Yes, Voiceover comes as standard and it'll talk right out of the box.
The Macbook Air and Macbook Pro both have USB. The Macbook might too though
I'm not sure.
You can also copy your iTunes library using an external drive, though if
you want to save to it from the Mac, you may need to reformat it.

You could use iTunes Natch. This would give access to your iTunes library
on all your devices. You would have to pay, but I think it's worth it.

how accessible are mac laptps, i assume that they'll come with voice over
