I honestly don’t know if Duo Lingo works on Android too – I can’t see why not.
Have a look for it in your apps store. There is a free version, if you don’t
mind the ads; I am paying monthly but it is cheaper to enrol for the year.

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions. On exploring some of the Braille Edge
settings I see I can get the Notepad to display in uncontracted braille. It
isn’t that big a faff to switch from one to the other so I am using this
function for my SD which has all my German files, and then switching back to
contracted braille for the SD-card I use for my writing classes.
Today I also followed the instructions to make my Braille Edge a display for my
iphone. For most of the lessons this won’t be necessary, but will be really
useful when it comes to the comprehension pieces.
So, I think I’m sorted, but thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

hi there
yes for me with the elBraille i can switch very quick between different types
of braille. on the i-phone it's very good now what one can do even change to
your own braille keystrokes.
i never liked using braille but again now with this elBraille if you go in to
the jaws braille settings it's so much better to what you can change. there
always seemed to be a linne of braille under what i was reading say in browsing
the web but now i have altered things and to read is a real pleasure.

You're welcome, hope it helps.
I don't know how things will work with the iPhone. What I mean is
that the iPhone Braille settings will allow you to set the way in
which your display functions - 6 dot braille, 8 dot braille,
contracted or uncontracted input/output etc. I don't know whether
that means that you'll be able to take notes using the native
settings of the Braille edge and use the iPhone settings for the
lessons or what. I've only ever used the Brailliant which has no
notetaking possibilities so I don't know whether it will be possible
to use the other features of the Edge when you're connected to your
iPhone. Should be interesting.
All the best, John

I'll certainly give it a go. I'd not thought to connect my Braille Edge to
the Iphone.
So, okay, this might be an easier way of accessing the app, but doesn't
address my desire to keep a dictionary on the Braille Edge, but I will try
Steve's suggestions. I don't want to turn my Braille Edge into displaying
grade 1 only as I also use it for my Creative Writing Classes and having
everythi ng in Grade 1 would be a pain.
But certainly the lessons themselves using the Braille Edge is a good idea.
Thanks.

Hi Alison
I think I have a solution for you. I am using Duolingo to learn french and I
connect my brailliant to my phone while I'm learning.
Not only does this make selecting words much quicker in my opinion, but it
allows you to read everything that's on the screen at your leisure thus
allowing you to understand how words are spelled easily.
For me, I don't think I'd have stuck at it for what is now over 150 days if
I didn't have the Brailliant to make life easier.
Hope this helps, John

Hi Alison,
Doesn't it have a single command for changing between contracted and
uncontracted Braille? Usually it is Space and G.
Also, you could turn on Cursor Expansion, this is where it expands only
the word under the cursor to uncontracted Braille.
All the best

For some time I have dabbled with learning German but have recently
discovered the Duo Lingo App on my iPhone which has re-ignited my
enthusiasm, but I have a problem and am looking for some suggestions.
The app does have some self-voicing capability but as you swipe
through, it is Daniel who gives his version of German words, so it is a
bit like learning two languages, the proper German and his version of the
So, I thought, I'd use my Braille Edge Notetaker to keep a dictionary
where I could write the new words down and see the words in brai lle
rather than jut hearing them, as would be the case if |I used Jaws.
The trouble is that my BrailleEdge , which I also use for my creative
writing classes, is set to display grade two and every time I write the
letters AR, for example, it turns them into an ar sign.
I could of course change the settings on my Braille Edge to grade 1,
but then that would be a real pain for my writing classes.
Any ideas?
