Hi Jackie -

As my tip snapped off yesterday, I had to use my cane as if it had a tapping tip, I don't ike this method at all, I find it slow, and less revealing of one's environment.

Thanks for your thoughts, and those of others too, that have helped me understand the difference between tips -

Andy

Hi Andy

I don't know what the Revolutionary cane is like as I haven't used it. I've been using an Ambutech cane for many years now, and I like it. The Ambutech is heavy, so you would get a good clonk off it if you got in the way, (smile).

I used to use a small tip where I tapped the cane, then I tried a standard roller and quite liked it. But when I moved to Northampton, the Rehab Officer who assisted me with general mobility asked if I'd like to try the giant roller as the pavements here are particularly appalling. I've found that really useful, and I'm happy to stick with it. The larger tip means my cane doesn't snag as much, and I do pick up pretty good feedback from the ground. I suppose the best thing though is protecting my wrist a bit as you can get quite a jolt when the cane gets caught in a divet.

Give one a try for a while, you can always go back if it doesn't suit.

Hi Jackie -

Couple of things if I may?

Can you tell me what the difference is between an Ambutech and the one I currently have which is the Revolutions?

Also, does the jumbo tip roll easier/smoother than the standard roller tip? I've only had experience of the roller, and have found I can achieve very good speed and safety, but am always looking for improvements.

Regards -

Andy

Hi Andy

I use the large roller-ball tip on my long cane which is an Ambutech. I
used to use a small mushroom shape, then the smaller roller, and now
prefer the large one. This is a lot less harsh on your wrist, especially
where pavements are so uneven. With a roller, it also saves you having to
lift the cane and tap it as you walk, though I do this when I'm
landmarking. Your local Society or Rehab Officer should be able to find
out whether you can get these free of charge, so it's definitely worth
asking.

Subject: [access-uk] long canes

Hi all -

Since choosing no longer to be a guide dog owner, the GDBA have supplied
me with a long cane [Revolution with roller tip], but now that I need a
new tip, they say I have to fund my own, or try social services.

I've just looked at the RNIB website, under long canes, and can see my
Revolution cane listed. Firstly, I assume I would be charged the VAT free
price? and secondly, can somebody tell me about the different tips for
this cane? I can't quite figure out the advantages of one over another,
like I say, I have been using the roller tip, which seems to have good
durability for street work, what are the pros and cons of the other tips
over the roller tip?

Thanks for any help -

Andy
