Roger - this isn't completely accurate info, as in my experience, post codes
can play a part in determining priority and aids available.
I have found that being totally blind, with a hearing loss, I have been
considered a high priority for the best available digital aids, from my local
authority; I did have to state my case firmly in the beginning, stating how
important it was for me to have the best hearing feedback possible for dealing
with busy traffic.
I know of an authority that until quite recently, didn't have any digital aids
at all, to offer to people.
As with certain NHS care, not all is available to all, post code lottery still
exists.

Deaf people indeed do not have to pay for hearing aids. However the waiting
list can be years long and the choice is extremely limited. If anything outside
the narrow confines of the NHS supply is wanted one has to pay for their own. I
wear 2 aids but my personal needs are such I purchased my own.

And further to my earlier post re wheelchairs, deaf people do not have to
pay for their hearing aids or do they? Some of you on the list probably have

it is another inequality in provision we have to deal with Eleanor. this
is why the RNIB put their prices of canes up some years ago to prompt social
services into purchasing them for their blind citizens.

Our Social Services will supply the first cane and a tip of your choice
but all subsequent canes you buy yourself. A lack of finds was the reason and
no-one of my acquaintance here has had a cane from them for around 6 years.

Hi all -
Since choosing no longer to be a guide dog owner, the GDBA have
supplied me with a long cane [Revolution with roller tip], but now that I need
a new tip, they say I have to fund my own, or try social services.
I've just looked at the RNIB website, under long canes, and can see
my Revolution cane listed. Firstly, I assume I would be charged the VAT free
price? and secondly, can somebody tell me about the different tips for this
cane? I can't quite figure out the advantages of one over another, like I say,
I have been using the roller tip, which seems to have good durability for
street work, what are the pros and cons of the other tips over the roller tip?
