Hi Janet
If the desktop icon is lost,I would find the executable as follows:
Run (windows+R)
C:\ {enter}
P for “program files”, {enter} not program files x86
F for freedom scientific {enter}
J for JAWS {enter}
You will then find a list of the versions installed.
Cursor to the version you want to activate - {enter}
Press J until you hear “jfw.exe” SPOKEN.
PRESS SHIFT+F10.
CURSOR DOWN UNTIL YOU HEAR “SEND TO” spoken - {enter}
Cursor down until you hear desktop - {enter}
On the desktop you will then have a link to launch JAWS. You can then create a
hot key as Jackie described.

Hi Janet
When you install JAWS, it should place an icon on your desktop. However, to
make a hotkey, highlight the JAWS icon on your desktop and bring up its
Properties with the context menu. Tab until you hear ‘Hotkey none’, and press
J then enter. You might hear some administrator message, but OK it and the job
is done. Next time you unload JAWS and want to reload it, you should just be
able to press your right alt key with J, and Bob’s your uncle! By default, you
get the program icon, but you don’t get a hotkey to launch the program so you
have to create one with every new version and sometimes an update.
I hope that makes sense and gets you sorted.
Kind regards,
Jackie Brown
