As far as I can tell, providing you have ITunes 4.8 installed, the software
will interact with the various IPod models.
As for the menu bar, I have to say that wasn't the way I was planning on
dealing with this in the short term. The fact is that all of the menus have
their own unique shortcut keys associated with them, for example alt+E is
for edit. At the moment, pressing the alt key will announce the keystrokes
necessary to activate the menu items which I would have thought would have
been enough accessibility on the grounds that you would get used to the
keystrokes anyway. Having looked at the menu bar though, it can be made
accessible, it's just a question of how much of a priority I think it is for
the moment.

Hi Brian, Will your script also work with the 40 GB model of the IPod?
Also will it be possible to provide feedback on what menues the user is entering when they press the alt key and then follow this up with cursor left or right?

You would want to use ITunes because:
1. Some visually impaired people have found some difficulties with accessing Annapod explorer in terms of its relationship with the IPod Shuffle. Now I am sure some people will say they can access it, but some are having some real difficulty.
2. Particularly if people are getting the IPod from audible, why should they pay extra for Annapod when potentially we have access to ITunes.
3. There apparently is a problem transferring audible books via Annapod, in that when you quit the book and return to it, you lose your place. This does not seem to happen with transferring the book via ITunes 4.8.
Those are a few reasons, and, having done some more work on the scripts today, I can say that the access to ITunes is looking very good, even to the point where you can import CD tracks directly into ITunes, selecting the individual tracks you want. I just hope another release of ITunes does not come along destroying all my accessibility. That's often the problem with updates, although I would not mind if they made the whole application completely accessible without scripts, that's the ideal, but we would not want a step backwards.

It comes with the IPod, but you may not have the latest version which is 4.8. So you should download it.

brian, that's fabulous. This could be the thing that tips me into buying an MP3 player at last.
Will your scripts work with jaws 5? And which version of the iTunes software will you be basing it on? I understand that there is a new one that has either just launched or is about to launch that also has Podcast functionality built into its core.
Incidentally, my girlfriend has an iPod and so we have iTunes installed on this computer. If I get my own iPod, will it mean I can share the songs she has downloaded for herself from the iTunes store? Any ideas?

Members of the BCAB list may have seen my message to the effect that audible.co.uk was officially launched on 15 June. All the prices on the site are now in British pounds, they have a British phone number on there to contact them if you want to, and there is British content on the site as well as the existing material. There are British people on the end of the phone line too (smile)! I know, I've spoken to them.
Given that Audible.co.uk are now offering a free IPod Shuffle if you sign up for one of their listener plans, and because there are problems with transferring audible books using Annapod explorer, I have decided to create some jaws scripts for ITunes to make ITunes a totally keyboard accessible program as far as I can. Now that audible.co.uk is properly up and running, I am really keen to promote it as of course any source of audio books is a good thing. Added to this, if we have a situation where a visually impaired person can get the IPod Shuffle and not have to pay anything additional, this is a bonus.
These scripts will be free of charge, basically because I am creating them since I personally want access to ITunes and the Shuffle to transfer books from
audible. They should be ready for anyone who would like them some time within the next two weeks, and if people would like them as and when, please send
me a message.
At the moment, the following features are included. Please remember I am at an early stage with this.
1. I have included the ability to track focus in the various lists, for example what I call the main category list displaying such items as "library, radio,
music store, etc." The good thing is that my scripts do not depend upon highlight colour assignments to track the focus. This should also apply to the
list of songs in the opposite list which shows which songs are on the IPod Shuffle, although this has not been tested yet as I am awaiting my new IPod
from Audible.
2. The concept behind these scripts is that everything should be accessible from the keyboard. Therefore, we have a keystroke which moves you directly
into the library area where all the music or books are stored. Once there, you can use navigational keystrokes to move forward and back through the available songs or books in your library. Jaws will
announce the song in the library as you move to it, and will advise you when you get to the top or bottom of the list.
3. If you use the library navigation keys to find a song you wish to manipulate in the library such as to play it or delete it, use a separate keystroke to select it, whereupon it can be manipulated.
4. The other thing I have done is to make it possible to drag and drop into ITunes from windows explorer, and this seems to work well with audible books.
You find the file you want, copy it to the clipboard with control+C, then alt+tab over to ITunes, and hit control+V to paste it in there.
That's about it for the moment, but if anyone has any further suggestions, feel free to let me know.
