do you have to have maps open for this as I would like to give it a go?

Maps is great to use with Siri.  You just hold the home button in and say, 
"Navigate pedestrian to Sainsbury's", for example.  Siri will then say the 
location and ask if that is the one you want.  Say, "Yes" and the speech will 
direct you turn by turn to your location.  An ear-piece or headset paired 
with the iPhone works a treat with this for hands free navigation.

It's called Maps *smile*, built right in to your iPhone.  There is also 
Google maps if you prefer which works just as well.  No need to pay for GPS 
navigation any more.
