Hi Barry,

The 340, yes. Great little beastie, that is. The sound quality of the
Iriver players is far superior to the Ipods. I reckon it must be the
decoder they use.

Hi.

My Iriver HP340 has 40 Gig of storage, so that throws that Sony into a
cocked hat <Smile>.

The latest player from Archos has 80GB. Sony are way behind.

But it's only an iPod shuffle, around a gig of memory, no hard drive.
Admittedly it's reasonably priced tho.

Sony already has an arguably much better product out on the market which has
3 times the battery power. It's in their Network Walkman range and called:
NW-HD5. It has 20 gigs of storage and is said to be cheaper than an iPod.

Here's a link to a story about it (it goes over two lines so it might be
better to cut and paste it into your browser address bar):

Has anyone seen it? Felt itt? An iPod ain't exactly the most accessible of
objects besides the software being inaccessible.

Steve,

So you're saying the IPOD you have is completely workable for a blind
person? Now we could be interested. . . ..

(Sorry I haven't really followed this thread as, so far as I was aware,
nothing was really good; so if you're saying it works for you then please
confirm whether this is just to put software onto the IPOD, or can you
choose everything you want to play? If the latter, how much can you store
and please give full details of the IPOD

Thank.

Hi Tris,

I don't think you need the Itunes software, if you get the Ipod Explorer
from Red Chair software. It makes the Ipod look just like another drive.

Whilst iPod or iPod mini can come up as an external drive the actual way it
stores and organises it's data is quite another bucket of freshly mixed mud
since it is not human friendly. For this bit you need iTunes or Anapod to
help you do the organisation for you.

I personally take a dislike to iTunes software but on the other hand cannot
deny the ease of use in that it more or less automates the process of
feeding stuff in to synchronising with the iPod. Anapod can deal with the
iPod but the experience is not so slick.

Hi,

I was wondering whether it would be possible to connect the Ipod to the PC
without installing the software, and whether it would appear as a drive in
Explorer. Then files could just be copied over? I have done this with a
digital camera and wonder if it would work in the same way.

There are some people who apparently have no sight and who say they can use
and IPod without any problems. I looked at one of the click wheel models
and think it would be next to impossible to do.

So, the IPod shuffle seems the most suitable alternative. Designed without
a screen, with a wheel with fixed functions, it seems perfect. Plus, it's
only £99.99 for a 1Gb version. Shame the accessories are so bleeding
expensive.

The problem with Ipods isn't really the hardware however. It's the ITunes
software that can cause you the most trouble. A lot of people have reported
that it is a swine with screen-readers. In fact, it is that bad that it
won't even work with Apples new screen-reader they are bundling with the
next release of there operating system.

There is however a solution, Anapod explorer from red chair software. This
now supports the IPod shuffle and gives access to the shuffle like most
other devices in Windows Explorer.

Of course, you have to use another method of getting music onto your PC, but
at least you can now get it onto an IPod and look cool!
