Good call. I did precisely that and speech immediately restored; I don't really 
know why they include that status cell option anyway.

You may have your braille status cell turned on, either to the left or to the 
right. Even when not using refreshable Braille, having the status cell on 
completely crashes voice-over. The only way to fix this is to get a sighted  
person to turn the status cell off.
