Andy, I don't have a guide dog, but I have been asked quite bluntly by several children why I was walking with a white stick. You can usually hear the gasps of horror from nearby parents each time it happens. The thing is that most kids won't have met a guide dog, so they won't understand why they're different from normal dogs. What most kids will know though, is that they like dogs because as a rule they're friendly. When children ask me directly about my cane, I tend to ignore the apologies of whichever adult is nearby and answer the question straight. For the most part, the kids seem genuinely interested and responsive. It's worth trying the same thing with the kids that are distracting your dog. Ask them if they have met a guide dog before, then ask if they know what one does. My guess is that they probably won't know. You're on home territory at that point, this is everyday stuff for you. Explaining to the kids what a guide dog does, and why it's important not to distract one will achieve several things. You'll have taught a small person something valuable, you'll have stopped them from distracting your dog and you'll have given yourself 5 minutes to stop and take time to focus on something familiar. Before you know it, you'll have made a lot of friends amongst the kids in the neighbourhood and you'll be ready to head off to wherever you were going in the first place.
