Hello Jackie.

This seems to be a known outlook bug, one which they probably won't bother to fix. We have 2 options. The first option is i take a quick look for you via remote support sometime, i'm not saying you haven't done everything right i'm just curious more than anything to see if gmail have changed their server options so you can't delete emails. I don't have a working outlook install to test it though so i'd like to see if i can fix it for you. The second option is you make the switch to thunderbird. Its a lot more convenient in my opinion to carry your emails portable on a pen drive, as well as of course having it on your PC. all your emails are syncronised and obviously it works with all major screen readers. its also faster than outlook. Let me know if you'd like any more info on the above, perhaps we should take it off list and post back when/if we find a sollution?

cheers,

Mo.

Hi Adrian

I do receive them in Outlook, but they appear in an Inbox folder in a
different tree called Gmail which, by default, is closed. When I open it,
then the Gmail folders are revealed pertaining to that account. My problem
is deleting them in Outlook, I can't. I need to log into my Gmail account
on the web, check every bloody box for each message, then delete. I just
wish I didn't have to do that, but it's the only way I can get round it.

What I have said remains strange in that I subscribed to the Eyes-Free
mailing list using my BT account, but they all seem to come in under my
Gmail account which I didn't even have at the time. Being quite honest
about it, I don't keep that well, so my time on the PC per day is limited
for fiddling around and persuading something to do what I want.

Ho-hum, never mind! (smile).

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Jacky

You are definitely going about it the hard way, I receive all my mail in my
outlook inbox no problem, not sure why you can't receive the messages.
Something must be wrong in the settings somewhere.

Adrien

Hi Mo and Andrew

Thanks to your input both, I have now got rid of my back-log of messages.
It's a bit of a long way round for a shortcut, but I checked all the
messages, then deleted them in the way you suggested Andrew.
Now my various
folders in Outlook are cleaned out. I still wish I could have them come
into my regular Inbox like all my other subscriptions are set to do, since I
have rules assigned so each list has its own folder. But, hey, that's got
rid of what I don't need for now, and I'll just keep on top of the traffic
on the Gmail page now I know what happens.

Thanks guys, great stuff.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Jackie.

I'm not sure if i'm understanding you correctly, so please bare with me.
I too can't seem to find an option to mark all the messages via the web, it
must be a GMail bug. i'd hit control A to select all in the list view in
outlook, and hit delete. The difference between pop and imap essentially is
that pop was designed to download mail from a server to your computer, then
the mail would either be deleted from the server or remain there for ever
regardless if you deleted it on your PC, unless you expressly set server
options manually. Imap is a lot more versitile.
any actions you carry out on your PC are replicated in realtime to your mail
on the server, its a lot more efficient. so in other words, unless you set
outlook to keep a copy of mail on the server its deleted or moved to trash.
you can also access all your folders via imap more efficiently, copy mail
between folders, etc so the long and short of it is you've made an excellent
choice by using imap. Also, if you use other devices and set your mail up
via imap, any actions carried out on your other devices are also
automatically carried out on your PC because it'll syncronise. I hope this
all makes sense? what did you have trouble with when deleting using outlook?
to speed things up, i'm more than happy to give you a call at your
convenience so we can discuss this, just drop me a note off list.

all the best,

Mo.

Could I possibly ask two more Gmail questions please?

Firstly, does anyone know how to delete Emails on the
Gmail web page?
Now I have created an account in Outlook, thanks to the
very good
instructions on a link Mo provided, I can now read my
messages, but am
unable to delete them. I can't seem to find the box to
check them all
on the website so I can delete them from the server, and I
can't
delete them from Outlook in the same way I can with all
stuff in
folders from my regular Inbox. I hope this makes sense.

Secondly, what is the difference between Imap and Pop,
apart from the
protocols? I opted to route my Gmail account to Outlook
2003 using
Imap, and just wonder what the difference is in using it
instead of Pop.
Thanks.

Jackie Cairns
