Hello George, yes the netbook has an ordinary audio socket.

Just to let you know i solved the problem. 
Some how the netbook audio playback speakers were muted. 
Now working just great, but many thanks Geortge for the asdvice,

Hi George, sorry for not replying to the original post, but here goes
anyway.
I do not think I explained the situation too well, I had a senior
moment,
lol. 
With my wife's Acer 1 xp home netbook.

When I said there was no audio at all, Imeant the Netbook built in
speakers
didn't seem to be working anymore. 
No sound was coming from the netbooks speakers.
