I have not read all this thread but I use the close all program under the 
Windows  platform and it saves me a lot of time.  . This comes in 64bit and 32 
bit flavours. The great thing about this program is that it will close all open 
windows and   programs but leave any screenreader or items in the system tray 
unaffected.

If I need to close specific programs I use either alt tab or as suggest Task 
manager to get the full list. Control shift escape.
