I believe Benjamin's description is accurate as the big smile face is :D where the D represents an open mouth.

Can somebody tell me the difference between :] and :-] when it comes to emoticons? I get them in text messages at times, and thought I knew than :] meant a smile, but don't know about :-].

:) is a smile (round parenthesis not square brackets).

The colon (one dot above another dot) represents two eyes; the curving right parenthesis represents a smiling mouth.

I believe :-) means the same thing, with the addition of a hyphen between the eyes and smiling mouth representing a long straight nose.

Hope that helps
