Coming in on this thread, I do use my iCloud address but really would like
to make it more useful. However, I have not found good and straightforward
instructions to set up the iCloud account on a Windows PC. If anyone has
done this and can give me step by step and indication (where needed) what
servers have to be etc, I'd be absolutely pleased!:)

Or if you have an Apple ID why not activate iCloud Mail and receive list
mail that way. Had absolutely no problems since doing this. I even see
my own messages actually get to the list rather than my own copy of my
list messages as of the case with Gmail.

It just ties you to a certain provider, and if you finally gain your

Why not just use a "proper" dedicated email provider like gmail$com,
