Since my message earlier this evening, I have managed to identify the
JAWS.INI file, copy this and followed your instructions. Below is what
I think you want me to do;

Firstly I certainly would put jaws through another set of speakers,
the INI file is the jfw.ini file in the jaws that you have. You will
need to insert the line
synth1port=
followed by the exact name of your onboard soundcard. The best way to
find this is to go to control panel then sounds and audio devices and
look for the soundcard that is the onboard one. Virtualise the window
with insert plus control and W . Now copy to the clipboard the exact
name of your soundcard. Open the jfw.ini file and go down to the line
that says, Synth1LongName=Eloquence for JAWS, or it could say another
name, depending on how your jaws is set. The important thing is the
synth1 long name =. Immediately under this line you should type
Synth1Port=
immediately followed by the name of your onboard soundcard. This
should be placed following the = sign with no space or it will not
work. The phrase should be on a line of it's own and immediately
followed by the next line. please be very careful doing this as you
could lose jaws if it is not done correctly! However, I do advise you
to do it in this way, as you say that you will be making recordings.
I do a lot of shoutcast broadcasting and find that this must be done
in order not to hear jaws all over what you are broadcasting and the
same will take effect if you are making recordings. You will also find
this useful to be able to do other things on the PC whilst making any
recordings. Using this setting, I am able to write e-mail, converse on
MSN, look at web pages, and all manner of things whilst music is
playing over the other card. Please also be aware that until you
restart jaws, this will not take effect.

That's magic. I'd much rather not tamper about with the on-board
card as I may give this computer to someone else if I upgrade later.

expand a bit on that as I don't understand what you mean: I'm
assuming that the ini is some form of jaws boot up file?
You also said "need an extra small pair of speakers or separate
headphones to hear jaws from another source. " I'm hoping to
continue hearing jaws on my existing computer speakers but have an
optical coming from my DVD recorder to the optical line-line in on
the Soundblaster. So although I'll be hoping to switch the optical
lin from in to out, in the main, it will be on the in position for
most of the time, to in order me to record ad material from my dvd
recorder to GoldWave on my computer.
However, if I need a second pair of speakers, I can pick a pair up
tomorrow from PC World when I go for the Sound Blaster.
Any ;more advise would be very welcomed and thanks again for
responding to my enquiry.

Yes, this should be possible, as you already have your onboard
soundcard enabled. A lot of people, when they get another sound
card installed by someone, get the old card disabled as the person
installing it thinks they can't want 2 of them. I had the devil's
own job explaining this to the last technician that installed
soundcards on my PC. My advice at this stage, would be to make the
new card the default card and the onboard card the backup. If you
are using Jaws, you will need to insert a line into the INI file
that tells jaws to go to the onboard card. You will also need an
extra small pair of speakers or separate headphones to hear jaws
from another source. Let me know if you need further help.

Hi all.
I'm planning to travel into PC World in Glasgow tomorrow to
purchase the creative Soundblaster live 24 bit external soundcard,
Can anyone confirm that with this card attached, I will be able to
hold onto my existing on-board sound card for jaws, and use the new
external card for listening to my music or ad movies, which I have
on my computer. I use Winamp for all of my audio stuff.
Finally, if the above is possible, is setting this up achievable
without sighted assistance.
