[access-uk] Re: can i turn off my firewall

Hi, how do I turn off the message that user account control is turned off and alerts like that in Vista? Of course, I could turn it on, but only Window-Eyes appears to fully support the UAC, and not JAWS, NVDA, etc. Thanks in advance.

Yep, I agree Andrew. If you turn it off, you get messages all the time that your computer might be at risk. Maybe you can turn those intrusive messages off too, but I just leave well alone. I'm always kind to my computer, try not to give it any grief, and hope to hell it behaves for me (grin).

Hi Jackie,

I use a Netgear DG834PN router, and the firewall is good, but you will not really affect your system by running the windows firewall. If your system
works how you like it, I'd leave it switched on. <Smile>.

As we say here in bonny Scotland, "if it's no broke dinny try and fix it".
<grin>.

All the best

Ray, ours is a Netgear router provided by Sky, our ISP. But I've always
left the Windows firewall running because it never occurred to me I'd be
safe to turn it off and let the router do its thing alone. That's why I'm
here, to learn from you guys!! (smile).

Jackie, it does seem not all hardware firewalls are equal. Something
called "stateful packet inspection" is incorporated into some,
including the Linksys and Netgear firewalls. No idea what this
actually is, but it is supposed to be better than not having it.

I bough to your superior knowledge Steve, but I've always been told to
use
whatever is going as well as the router for added protection.
