Hi there, Here's the truth on insurance, though things change almost daily, so please check and don't take my word as I can't be responsible for your decision.
Laptop insurance (in my opinion) is a "Must" I take out a five year garantee when purchasing the laptop, but sometimes you have 28 days before you can't take them up on the offer, in which case leave it to be sure your computer isn't totaly useless and needs to be returned within the first 14 days! Most five year insurances cover accidental, repair or replacement, fully covered no charge for repairs on parts or labour. My hubby got a new replacement laptop with just 3 months left on the garantee, because it couldn't be repaired, it was really good.
If you don't take one out you could almost certainly have to pay out for a new rom drive before two years are out and laptop parts cost a fortune. My laptop had two new cd/dbd/cdrw drive replacements in three years plus a new fan and prosessor.
House content insurance wouldn't cover a laptop as its a luxury item which can be taken out of the home, same for things like glasses, jewelery, musical instruments, mobiles and handheld games. House content means just that, furnature, carpets, appliances and small personal possessions like cd player, tv, dvd/video player and a Very small amount of cash is covered.

Lara, I'm not sure how insurance works as I'm no expert. But we've got accidental damage on our home contents policy. I think you just have to be careful in a shop when they'll promise you the earth to take out extended warranty. I guess what you have to watch with insurance is that if you have an accident, you aren't clobbered with premiums the following year you pay it. Can't you tell I'm not an expert?
