You can continue without doing it, but the warning is there. I used to
chicken out too until I understood exactly what I was doing with iTunes in
some small way! (smile.)

Just to add to this, iTunes will probably tell you that you have not backed
up your purchases to the iTunes Library, and asks you if you want to do
this. Accept and continue with the backup as Martin says.

Ok.

1. install iTunes. 2. Connect your phone via usb, 3. Launch iTunes and make
sure you are logged into your apple id account, iTunes will prompt you for
this. 4. Tab to the iPhone button and press space bar. 5. Tab to back up
now,, 6, press enter. 7. Wait. 8 when the tune plays, all is done.
