Just sack the telly because there is nothing worth watching or listening to on there anyway. If it wasn't for the wife and kids, I wouldn't bother even turning it on. I can get the News and sport info from Radio and Internet. ----- Original Message ----- From: "martin wilsher" <m.wilsher@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

2I can agree whole heartedly with the centiment that nothing is a substitute for visual info. Audio description goes a fair way to describing what's on
the screen, but I've come across some horrendous omitions in AD on movies
and such, would it not be fair to say these sometimes crop up in TV too? AD is great, but it needs to be more widespread. It should be a given rather than a luxury. At the moment, I feel it is viewed by the broadcasters as a bit of a luxury. Approximtely how much subtitling is done for television?
Thanks.

And as for eight percent of the licence fee? Yes, I'd go with that idea as
audio described programming is running at about that level. Thanks.
Hope to hear from you soon.

We need Sky or to buy a special freeview box to get AD whereas a sighted
person can watch BBC channels with a terestrial aerial.

[In 2005, the broadcasting watchdog Ofcom stipulated that 76 channels must
carry AD. Current regulations state that all BBC channels must audio
describe at least 8% of their programmes per week, the rest of the channels mentioned have slightly lower targets, but all are raised by Ofcom every 2
years.].
So, should we pay 8% of the licence fee, raising by 2% each year?

There's no way that audio description can come close to describing the
special effects that are produced on TV these days. For instance, I am told
that Doctor Who has favulous computer generated effects.

So, where's the equality there?

Barry

I disagree. Nothing is a substitute for visual information and that is from
someone who has never seen.

Peter wrote
"We are not equal, we can't see the pictures."

But audio descriptions gives access to visual information.

A sighted deaf viewer is not able to hear, so is offered subtitles,
but still pays same fee as the hearing/sighted viewers.
Sighted deaf have a good fair argument to have 100% subtitles,
they can say "We pay, so we should have it"
Blind people seem to be saying:
"we want audio descriptions, but we are not prepared to pay for it"

Fair enough, so why should the rest of the TV viewers subsidise the
blind?
