Hi Paul

I know someone at RNIB who might be able to help with this.  I'm passing on
any responses people have received from the likes of ITV.  Frankly their
excuses are lame, and their responses just standard 'thanks but no thanks'.
I don't think it is acceptable to have to purchase and carry multiple
devices to achieve something that should be available across all platforms.
If it can be done on Android, it can be done on iOS and Windows.  And if it
can't, then the culprits should have their apps or websites removed because
they don't comply fully with equality standards.  This has gone on for far
too long now, it's time they were brought to account for what is clearly an
inequality issue.

If anyone has Emails from the likes of ITV that would help me to collate
something to take forward, please send me off list.

Kind regards,

Jackie Brown

Hi Jackie,

I totally agree with all of what you say. it's about time ITV got their act
together and ensured that AD is available on all and not just a selected
number of platforms.

A few yewars ago, I contacted Julie Howells who was working for RNIB and one
of her roles was to contact website developers on peple's behalf, to draw
their attention to the fact that their websites were not fully accessible to
assistive technology users.

I rang Julie a good few years ago, over a site which was very hit and miss
to use.

I can't now remember the outcome but think I got a response from whoever
created the site.

Of course, RNIB could only get involved with UK based sites.

Julie left RNIB some time ago and in recent years, when I contacted RNIB
over inaccessibilty of websites, I was told that RNIB wont' deal with
individuals over such matters but only with companies.

Problem there is I doubt very much that a company itself is going to contact
RNIB over inaccessibility of a website, unless someone points it out to them
and further suggests they contact RNIB.

I think it's very sad if RNIB take this stance as it's most unhelful.

So, who now could we get to fight our cause.

Regards

Paul.

Hi Steve

I take your point that perhaps accessing AD on a PC isn't going to be a
priority for some, but I don't think we should be expected to carry an
Android device for one thing, an iOS device to access another, and so on.
If the ITV Hub carries AD on the Android and Fire platforms, then why not on
iOS and PC?  And as for Channel Five, that's a complete no-no.  In the grand
scheme of things it's not overly important, but I'm not alone in thinking
it's about time these companies should be providing AD and accessibility
across 'all' platforms.

Hi Jackie,

My own feeling on it is that all these companies are trying to move away
from PC access and use phones and tablets instead.  So I don't think
campaigning for PC use will get you anywhere, but that's my feeling.

For example, Seeing AI is on iOS, and not Android, but I'm not getting upset
about it, it's the way of the world.  I use whatever method I have to hand
to use it more easily, which is why in your case, I recommended the Polaris
Mini.

Hi Steve

I accessed the ITV Hub and an AD programme last night on my Polaris Mini so
will indeed be taking it with me.  But it isn't going to deter me from
putting pressure on these companies to deliver AD on all platforms.  I can't
do much on my own so anyone who feels particularly frustrated should do
likewise.  But instead of targeting ITV Hub directly, we need to try to
influence bodies to campaign officially.

Hi Jackie,

Silly question, but why not take your Polaris?  That will let you watch the
ITV hub with audio description.  It's smaller than your laptop, and less for
you to carry about.

All the best

Steve

Hi Yusuf

Yes looks like that's exactly right.  I checked iOS earlier and it is
nowhere to be seen yet either.  It's shameful quite honestly! I've written
to them a few times, along with many others, but clearly ITV doesn't think
it is important enough.  In the grand scheme of things it isn't, but it
would be nicer to follow a programme with AD included.

Last time I checked Jackie, I couldn't figure out how to do this either and
don't think it is currently possible. It appeared that the only way of
watching catch up TV with audio description from ITV was to use the Android
App.

Has anyone used the ITV Hub on a PC before and, if so, how you find
programmes with Audio Description?  When I go away, I generally take my
Amazon Fire tablet as the ITV Hub definitely carries AD.  But I was thinking
of taking my laptop to cover everything I need instead, but haven't found
anything on the ITV Hub online which points to AD.

Thanks for any pointers.
