Banking for the blind

The Co-operative Bank has confirmed it is providing talking cash machines
for
blind and partially-sighted customers.

More than 400 machines were introduced this week, with an additional 2,000
expected to be fitted in branches by the end of 2014. The facility will
eventually be available at ATMs within all Co-op Bank branches and most of
the
company's convenience shops.

The talking ATMs will allow customers to operate transactions through a
headset,
which is plugged into the ATM. Private, verbal instructions will be given to
the
customer to prompt their actions. High-contrast screens will also be made
available to assist partially sighted customers.

The roll-out has been supported by the Royal National Institute of Blind
People
(RNIB), which is campaigning for all banks to introduce this service.

Campaigner and Co-op bank customer Mark Ellis, says: "There is one 400 yards
from my house and it has made such a difference. I feel that I have my
independence back as for the last 30 years I've relied on help when getting
my
cash out. I feel it's compulsory for banks to assist their blind or
partially
sighted customers."
