Hi Billy

Well if you are struggling with your iPhone, it doesn't seem sensible to
suggest an iPod Touch, though I must confess you end up accepting iTunes
whether you like it or not! (smile).

But what you say you require suggests something like a Victor Reader Stream,
BookSense, Milestone or Plextalk Pocket. They all take SD cards with up to
32GB of storage, all have a USB cable which allows you to connect the device
to your PC, and they all come up as drives in My Computer so you can copy
and paste files into their respective designated folders. They all also
support Audible.

Of these four, to help you out a bit if I can, the Plextalk Pocket is
probably the most sophisticated in terms of its creating of DAISY books,
WiFi etc. It's a fantastic recorder, this is its strength. The rotten bits
though are the voice, and those infuriating tones you can't turn off
altogether!

The BookSense carries the most versatile file formats when reading files
with the Paul or Kate voices, and the XT model has Bluetooth and an FM
radio.

The Milestone is the smallest, but it has the fewest buttons, so you would
need to learn to combine key presses when undertaking various tasks. The
facility to add the Fame Colour Detector is great, and the speaker is by far
the clearest of the lot.

But I can't help feeling the Victor Reader Stream may be the easiest for you
in terms of its very tactile and well defined buttons. It is chunkier than
the others, but robust. We like them all for different reasons.

It depends what you want to pay, but having identified the facilities you
require on a machine, one of these might be the ticket. On the other hand,
someone else here may suggest an alternative that may easily be suitable.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Jackie, Gosh, this is the problem. I have looked at so many mp3 players
over the last week or so.
I have been looking at the Ipod Touch, but as I said. All the Itunes stuff,
puts me right off. I'm just barely putting up with my iPhone4 at the moment.

I just want an mp3 player, that will play back different file formats, and
it must also have an expansion slot for SD card. It also would be good if it
could play audio books, and possibly have a usb connector as well, don't
really want much ehh,

Billy

Hi Billy

Are you looking for a mainstream player such as an Olympus, Apple, etc, or
would you consider one of the specialist DAISY/MP3 players? I have written
an extensive two-part article on the four main players which has appeared in
the July and August issues of Access IT. Basically the piece pulls together
the Milestone, BookSense, Victor Reader Stream, and the Plextalk Pocket,
detailing their features, pros and cons, prices and dealers. It may give
you some idea of what they can offer if you choose that particular route.

Enjoy.

Jackie Cairns

Hello Jackie, this is the big problem with Apple for me.
The fact, they will not let customers use third party software etc.
I have the iPhone4, and not being able to upload my audio book library is
nothing short of shocking. This is why I am weary about the ipods.
I have Indeed heard some good reports about the Olympus players, and the
Sansa clip + mp3 players.

Anyway, thanks for as usual good sensable Information,

Billy

Hi Billy

I agree completely that iTunes is really crap, least that's what I think
personally, but you do sort of get used to it. I use it on the Mac, and
while I have to ponder every keystroke before I perform a task, I kind of
get there and can now make playlists.

There are lots of podcasts out there on iTunes, no doubt, and how to get the
most out of an iPod. Personally, the advice to have one is sound if it's
music you want. You can do lots of other stuff with an iPod such as add
applications like radio stations, giving you a massive music experience.

Or you could purchase an Olympus that speaks many functions and filenames if
you want something a bit more tactile. There are lots of models to choose
from, and I am not up on what's best with speech these days as I don't use
them. My friends tell me the DM5 is an excellent machine, so you might want
to consider it if Apple really isn't your thing.

Good luck.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns
