hi all,

after following the messages about the olympus recorders not talking the
file and folder names particularly on the dm-7 and the dm-5 i communicated
with a couple of people privately as i wanted to get a dm-7 but didn't want
to get it only to find i couldn't get it to speak what i want it too.
i then spoke to both olympus and sight and sound technical help desks and
heard the dm-7 speaking the file and folders over the phone so decided to
go ahead and get one.
after recording 5 short sample recordings i found that when going into the
recording folder afterwards that like others it only spoke one file name
and i couldn't navigate the other files or folders.
knowing i had heard it working over the phone i started trying to find out
what was causing the problem by firstly reading the manual and then asking
someone to check what was displayed on the bottom of the screen when you
choose the recording folder when it has some recordings in it.
it turns out it's all down to the 3 function keys.
function key 2 shows the file properties and function key 3 shows the
folders properties and when you first choose the recording folder i believe
it is showing one of these property screens probably the file one and that
is why it only speaks the one file name.
but when in one of these property screens function key 1 is labelled as the
list key and if you press this key it takes you into the list of files and
you can curser up and down them with them all being spoken.
likewise when your in the list of file names you can curser left to get
into the list of folders and they will all be spoken as well.
i haven't put any other audio content on there yet but suspect it will be
the same in the other folders off of the home screen, so it appears that
all you need to do to make all the files and folders be spoken is to press
function key 1 after entering a folder off of the home screen.
hope this helps people to get their olympus recorder speaking the way they
expected it too.

pete.
