Thanks very much for the update, Glenn, and I look forward to your findings after trying the dictionary.

Hi Vivien,

I will find time over the weekend to try Pearl with a multi language dictionary, but I can report back that the Open Book software that is required to be installed on the computer to interface with the Pearl Camera CAN be navigated with a Braille Display. OpenBook is a Freedom product and uses the same Braille commands as JAWS.

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Thanks, I look forward to hearing more if you get a chance to test it
further with a dictionary. I wasn't expecting the Pearl or OpenbBook to
translate - it's printed bilingual dictionaries I'm trying to get access to, such as those my sighted peers were accessing when I was studying languages at university. Ultimately, I strongly feel publishers should, in this modern
age of technology and electronic formats, be taking responsibility for
making this material available in formats which can be accessed with a
Braille display and screenreader etc. That does bring me to another
question: can the interface, text which is recognised etc be navigated with
a Braille display, or only speech? This would eliminate, or at least
minimise, the need for relying on the voice switching between languages in
such materials as bilingual dictionaries, and it would then boil down to
whether the Pearl (and/or OpenBook) can actually recognise the text
accurately?

Regards
Vivien

Pearl handles foreign languages very well ( although I have only tried
French, German). It does not translate, but once the language is switched
to the desired one, it reads back the captured text as well as it reads an
English document back in English.

I have not tried a dictionary, but i shall find one and have a go and will
report back to the list

Regards

Glenn

Hi Glenn and all,

Does anyone know, then, how OpenBook (and/or the Pearl camera) cope, if at
all, with foreign language material - especially more than one language
within the one document, book etc (eg an English-Italian/Italian-English
dictionary or English-German/German-English dictionary)? I was going to
try
out the demo when I eventually get a scanner, but just thought I'd ask
here
on this list, given the recent discussion about translation software.

Vivien

The Pearl for Freedom Scientific is really good at reading bound books. It
works with Open Book version 9.0 as the scanning engine on the PC and
copes
very well with the dip into the centre of the spine. You have the added
value of OpenBook's ability to manipulate documents, including for those
with some vision, the capability to enhance the size, colour and
presentation of the text on the screen. It is really fast as well, 2-4
seconds for a page of text. The camera can be used in single page or multi
page mode where it senses the book turn and automatically captures the
next
image.

Price is £1200 for the Pearl Camera and Openbook, £625 for the camera on
its
own. The camera is portable, folds into a carry case about the size of a
portable umbrella.

Glenn

Hello,

Advice please.....

The Zoom-Ex from Humanware; what is it like for scanning bound books? Are
there any alternatives, such as use of a camera with Kurzweil etc?

Speed is of essence!

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

Mike
