Hi Glenn and all,

Does anyone know, then, how OpenBook (and/or the Pearl camera) cope, if at all, with foreign language material - especially more than one language within the one document, book etc (eg an English-Italian/Italian-English dictionary or English-German/German-English dictionary)? I was going to try out the demo when I eventually get a scanner, but just thought I'd ask here on this list, given the recent discussion about translation software.

Regards
Vivien

The Pearl for Freedom Scientific is really good at reading bound books. It works with Open Book version 9.0 as the scanning engine on the PC and copes very well with the dip into the centre of the spine. You have the added value of OpenBook's ability to manipulate documents, including for those with some vision, the capability to enhance the size, colour and presentation of the text on the screen. It is really fast as well, 2-4 seconds for a page of text. The camera can be used in single page or multi page mode where it senses the book turn and automatically captures the next image.

Price is £1200 for the Pearl Camera and Openbook, £625 for the camera on its own. The camera is portable, folds into a carry case about the size of a portable umbrella.

Regards
Glenn

Hello,

Advice please.....

The Zoom-Ex from Humanware; what is it like for scanning bound books? Are there any alternatives, such as use of a camera with Kurzweil etc?

Speed is of essence!

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

Mike
