Auto levels can be much better though. And they're very handy if you
can't see the dials.

Hi Damon,

You didn't hear some of our podcasts in context then.

The one I was using was the Zoom H4. But the only part bad about it, is
the auto gain control. And I was illustrating this. Manual levels are
wonderful, but the auto gain on most machines I would never use,
including the H4.

Most of my podcasts are done uysing manual level control, but that one
was an exception to illustrate the problems with auto gain. That's also
why I didn't normalise it.

Anyway, ignore that podcast for recording quality testing, all the Zooms
are fantastic recorders, better than the Olympus ones, but most are far
less accessible. That's the trade off.

All the best

Steve

What was the Zoom recorder you used in Our Place a couple of weeks ago
Steve? I was rather disappointed with the quality and slightly horrified
when the auto levels never recovered and your voice was barely audible
for the last 5 minutes of your podcast.

Was there a reason for that? I was quite excited about the idea of
getting the zoom H1 until I heard just how bad Zoom recorders can be, on
your show.

Neal Ewers is the god of audio for blind people currently it seems but I
wonder if the recorder and auto levels behave well because of his
amazing even toned deep voice? He is a seasoned broadcast expert I
believe and so perhaps also knows how to talk into the microphonesso as
not to excite them too much. I liked Steve Nutt's approach of making
loud bashes and clangs to see how the levels behave in real life.

...Damon
