Why are we not talking about one in the same creature?
The BBC's 5 Live coverage of most sport events is excelent and better to none ,
as you say and I think it's fair to say honestly, in the world.
Audio Description is similar but very different as you say.
But why should this be?
I'd really like to listen to the 5 live team commentary and if possible, also
supplemented by the audio description boys on my basic TV as though this was
normal.
Surely, it should only be a matter of moving the commentary team from the 5
Live studio, to the BBC 1 studio and adding a sprinkle of description if
nessessary!
There would of course need to be a box, asking if you needed this enhanced
commentary service .
If this was made available generally , then all of us would use it and why not.
One day perhaps.

We're not really talking about described sport in the same way that A film is
audio described though are we? The radio commentary is fine for following the
game, but it isn't an audio described commentary. For example for years I never
understood how the football commentator could possibly know what colour the
socks were given the distance of the players from the box. But then I didn't
realise that the socks go up the leg quite a way. There are other things that
I'd like to know about the players which would turn the commentary in to a
audio described commentary rather than just a commentary.
Like others have said though there's far too much general chit chat on 5live
commentaries and they sometimes forget at crucial points to actually describe
what is happening and start editorialising. Its particularly annoying if your
team has just scored and you want to know how the goal has scored. TMS is still
pretty good at keeping to description during the action though.

Hi all.
For rugby fans like myself, I'm looking forward to a fabulus few weeks
entertainment.
Last nights Wales v Franse was a spectacular meeting.
I'm really looking forward to my own team, Scotland, v Italy at 2 pm, then
England and all the other games later this afternoon and evening.
However, although the Scotland v Italy game is being broadcast by BBC 1
Scotland, I'll be listening to what I would consider the best audio
description, in any sport and that is currently being provided by the 5 Live
team in England.
Obviously, there is a presumption that as my game is on TV and people can see
their TV's, there is no great desire to include the audio from the 5 Live team
on top. But why not?
To get around this problem, I've tuned into 5 life on my Iphone whilst the
games are being showen on BBC 1 Scotland, in my local pub, but there is of
course a 20 second delay So there is no seamless Time Code between these, so
it does not work.
I just feel that such a high quality descrittion service, as 5 Live provide,
on top of the TV image, would grately enhance my overall listening enjoyment
as a totally blind person.
Any thoughts?
There is also another problem and that is if I was listening to Scotland v
England at Twickenham on 5 Live, there must be reasonable bias, such as you
would get if Scotland were playing England in Murrayfield with scottish
presenters!
So I think it's perfectly resonable that I be able to listen to Scotland V
England with scottish or better, mixed presenters that to be honest, does
occure sometimes within the 5 live presentation.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this and regardless which team you
will be supporting during the 6 Nations, you have a really great experience.
