Hi,
If you're going to host it from your own server, then you will need Apache,
as I said, then MySQL, then PHP then Wordpress. You'll need to create a
MySQL database. Telling you how to do it is outside the scope of just
Emails, but we can offer training or support on it.

Steve,
I wanted to create a personal website for my family. I have been told the
wordpress is the widely used platform. I was trying to install it on my pc,
but, it looks quite complicated. Instead, I am installing it on my Synology
so that I can create and hoste the site direct from my Synology server.

You can't just do that, you need Apache, PHP, MySQL even before you start.
What are you installing it onto and why?

I have just downloaded the zip installer from the wordpress.org and
installing it from there. To be honest, I am not sure what I need to install

You have to install PHP and also Apache web server. Are you trying to
install it to a web host?
