Hi, how can she do this? Normally she has to hover over the wireless icon in order for the credentials box to appear. Thanks in advance for sharing.

Hi, well we don't know about what settings they've changed, but I very much doubt it as, like I said, this next door neighbour could connect straight away since last night yet my girlfriend can't. Also, the wireless card she has is I believe a PCMCIA one since it goes into some sort of PC card slot. By the way, she did try to disconnect last night and re-connected, but still no luck. Thanks for the help though, greatly appreciated.

Hi Chris, I haven't seen this specific problem before but a couple of things come to mind.

I'd try disconnecting from the university network, doing a search for networks in range and reconnecting. This should ensure that your girlfriend is forced to reenter the key. I've found in the past that if my desktop accidentally connects to a different network, its possible not to realise that this has happened, in my case I got the message asking me to put the key in and thinking it was still in the edit field simply hit the connect button. Of course windows being the wanderful operating system that it is, you don't get a helpful error message telling you that the wrong key has been entered.

I've also found that external wireless devices such as USB are not as reliable as internal ones. I found that with a USB wireless stick my connection was being dropped all the time and that over time this got worse and led to other network instability. I don't know if this is the case for everyone but its certainly my experience.

I now use a wireless PCMCIA card and although I still periodically looze the network connection its better than the USB stick. Although I plan on going back to a wired connection as I personally am not very happy with wireless as a method for transmitting large amounts of data.

You mentioned a major outage of the university network, do you know if theyve changed any of their settings?

Subject: [access-uk] Wireless query

Hi all,
e-mailing on behalf of my girlfriend who needs urgent help please? For the past few months she's been able to connect to her college wireless network, which uses WPA as its encryption, fine. Since last night though, all she's seeing in the wireless notification icon is "acquiring network address", nothing else. However, her next door neighbour is connected fine. What could be going on? They did have a serious outage over the weekend, can that have anything to do with it? Also, the technicians has experienced problems with Vista and the wireless network, however I don't think that has anything to do with it since they're both running XP Home SP2. Finally, could it be to do with the fact that my girlfriend has an external wireless card whilst her next door neighbour's internal? We don't think so, but thought I'd ask anyway. Sorry for the many questions, but I hope there's enough there to answer one or all of them. Thanks in advance, and take care.
P.S. My girlfriend's tried everything she can think of, to no avail.
