is there a reason why the installation of sp2 would slow down my ftp upload and download speeds from 350 kbs s download and 30 upload to 20 kbs download and 10 upload speed?

Roger, Windows SP1 is not supported by Microsoft any more. if your version
is older than that, i.e. an original windows XP disk from a few years ago,
2001 perhaps, this version was full of bugs of many kinds and I would say an
upgrade would be worthwhile.

You can connect the laptop easily to the net if you have a router as the
connection to the net is just done by the router so it's just a case of
plugging the laptop in if it has an ethernet port.

If you have a USB modem this is a bit more of a pain as you will need to
install drivers.

To sum up then, I would say it is worth connecting to the net to get SP2 if
at all possible.

Cheers

Hi All

The wife's laptop has just died so today a new one arrived but without any
operating system installed. I have a legit copy of XP Home I've not used so
I loaded that. At the end of the installation it asked for the SP2 disc. I
haven't got one. She doesn't intend to have internet connection using mine
for that. I've tried to take it off my machine but it seems when my system
is updated no file is left on Downloads or anywhere I can find. I've tried
to download a copy but again it will install it to my machine but allow me a
copy. Short of connecting my wife's machine to the net just for the download
of the application I can't see any other way forward. Unless someone here
can help me please. As she doesn't intend to use the machine on the net she
doesn't need SP2 but it will not allow me to proceed without it.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
