To silence NVDA use insert, control and the letter s. This is what they call sleep mode which is a toggle. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Cairns" <jackie.cairnsplace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Subject: [access-uk] Windows 8 and NVDA questions

My friend has bought a laptop with Windows 8 Home Premium or whatever the
term is for a basic version nowadays. He has set it up using Narrator, and
is now running NVDA on it as he wants to dump JAWS. So the questions:

1. Getting Windows 8 to play the welcome and shut down chimes.

2. How to silence NVDA when K1000 and/or Open Book is running.

Many thanks for this. I can't help myself as I don't have Windows 8, and
haven't used NVDA yet.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns
