Well, I've taken a look and found out as much, really, as you've been able to tell me. I think I'm going to have to wait until I get a new computer because I didn't see any way of checking compatibility for a machine currently running XP and it may not be worth it for one which is now over five years.

I do. Basically you are only prompted if a third party
program, like an installation program, tries to perform
some action. Windows programs, on the other hand, you
won't be prompted. Also, in Vista, you had to listen to
the whole prompt and see if there's a continue button
(alt+c) or an allow button (alt+a). This won't be the
case as regardless of the prompt it's always yes button
(alt+y). With the jump lits feature, you right click an
application, pinned or unpinned, on the taskbar, and you
can, for example, view the last ten web pages you've
visited, or view the last ten word documents you've
worked on. So hope this helps.

Do you have experience of the improved user account
control and/or the jump list? These sound interesting.

Yeah sure. You can find out more at www.windows7.com.
The main improvements are very fast shutdown and bootup
times; more responsive than even XP; fully compatible
with most modern hardware and software; improved search;
improved user account control; improved accessibility in
some areas, i.e. network and sharing centre; pin/unpin
applications from the taskbar; jump lists; and that may
be it.

So, why shell out for Windows 7? A quick run-down of
the "improved" or "new" facilities would be nice,
please ...

Hello all,
I'd like to announce that for those in the EU,
including UK customers, you can pre-order Windows 7
from selective retailers from tomorrow (July 15) to
August 14, or whenever all stocks ran out, depending
on what's first. You can pre-order Windows 7 Home
Premium for just £50 and Windows 7 Professional for
just £100. From tomorrow go to www.windows7.com,
click the get Windows 7 link, click the change link,
select United Kingdom in the combo box of countries,
and follow the instructions to pre-order. The product
itself won't be released till October 22, but if you
order now you'll have the full product at over half
price. Enjoy! --
