Winamp finds a buyer -- and its not Microsoft By Wayne Williams Winamp was a massively popular media player in the nineties, but it withered under AOLs ownership, and failed to move with the times. Few people were surprised when a month ago AOL finally decided to cut its losses, announcing, starting December 20 2013, the site and associated cloud services, g Shoutcast, would no longer be available to the public. A petition to save the media player garnered close to 50,000 signatures, and Spotify created a fun tribute called Spotiamp, but the writing looked to be firmly on the wall for Winamp, despite rumors Microsoft was interested in saving the service. Today it appears Winamp has indeed found a savior, but its not one anyone was expecting. Although theres been no official announcement yet (hardly surprising given its New Years Day), a Whois request now shows Winamps name servers pointing to Radionomy, a service which lets you discover, listen to and create online radio stations. If Radionomy is indeed the new owner it bodes well for Shoutcasts survival, but what it will mean for the Winamp media player is less clear. Hopefully well have a better idea once an official announcement is made. Colin, who by the Lord's providence remains living near Fareham in Southern England, hopes you enjoyed a very blessed Christmas and are having a peaceful, prosperous and happy New Year during 2014. ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** access-uk-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq
