Yes – NVDA is a screenreader like Jaws but free. I assumed you had already
known that, sorry. If you are used to using Jaws then NVDA will also feel
pretty familiar though there are a few differences of course. Still you should
be able to use it pretty much straight away if you are feeling up to it.
To get both NVDA and VLC.
1. Go to www.Ninite.com
2. Tab down until you hear something like our screenreader accessible page and
press enter here.
3. 3 This will open a page of programs guaranteed to work for blind users. Go
down this page and use the spacebar to check the checkbox by each program you
want. I suggest that you select NVDA and VLC as a minimum but you can also
check WinAmp and actually any other programs you want.
At the end of this page there is a button which will say Get Ninite Installer.
This will download a small file to your PC in your downloads folder.
Find this file and press enter on it. And this will download and install all
the programs you have checked without you having to do anything else at all
except press alt 4 when it is finished. It is a brilliant download website.
You can now, if you want to experiment with NVDA.
I find NVDA works better than Jaws in some situations and Jaws works better in
some other.
You can experiment
To close and run NVDA and Jaws respectively.
To close Jaws insert F4
To run NVDA press control and alt and then N.
To close NVDA press Insert plus q for quit.
To run jaws again if you do not have a shortcut set up simply press windows r
and then type Jaws2019 without a space and press enter.
If you have both Jaws and NVDA running at the same time then it is slightly
more awkward.
Press windows B to go to the notification tray.
Press space on notification chevron button Now press the right arrow until you
hear NVDA and press the space bar here. This will open a nenu and the last
option will be to exit NVDA.
I would take your time but there are lots of people on this and other lists
who can help you with learning how to use NVDA to best effect.

Hi again David.
It was not until I had sent you my last message when I realised that VLC was
not a speach engine like JAWS, but rather, a media player.
That prompted me to attempt to download it and I've been struggling with this
now for over an hour. I clicked on VLC for Windows but nothing is happening.
Now you are talking about another creature called "NVDA"!
BNow that is a speach engine?
This is getting a little complicated for me now david.
So when playing a media file, I need to run NVDA then tell Windows to use VLC
for playing all of my audio files? Then launch JAWS 19 again?
Is this about right or am I still very confused?

I would also use Ninite.com to download VLC.
I also use Jaws but I often switch to NVDA when I want to use VLC.
Remember for best experience you need the NVDA VLC Addon.
Open NVDA Menu then go to tools and manage addons.
Go to the addon site from there and search for VLC. Download and run the addon
and you should be instantly ready to go.

Hi David.
VLC. Goodness, I've just upgraded to JAWS 19 too.
Perhaps it's a sense of loyality that I stick with Winamp, but your right, it
does not work too well these days and the details you get from VLC sounds
better than any Winamp that I've ever had.
Perhaps I'll look into getting a hold of VLC, just for all my audio stuff, if
that's possible.

I must admit that on my latest install of Windows 10 I have now not installed
WinAmp as there were some stability issues in previous installs.
I now use VLC pretty much exclusively. Actually the best setup is with VLC and
NVDA installed with the VLC plugin.
This seems to provide me with all that I used to get from Winamp with Jaws and
more. For example as I press left and right arrow keys NVDA wil announce time
elapsed. Pressing I will provide all the statistical information I need, length
of file, time elapsed, time remaining and so on.
Jaws needs to catch up and provide similar functionality with VLC I think.
The thing I really like with VLC is the control of rate of playback, left
bracket speeds up playback, left bracket slows down playback and pressing
equals normalises playback speed. I use this all the time when listening to
Podcast and spoken word content.
I also like the mass of granulated navigation keyboard shortcuts from large to
small jumps.
It may not be an issue for you but VLC also has a louder maximum volume than
WinAmp.
However if you really want to stick with WinAmp I suggest you visit Ninite.com
and download it from there as it appears to always have the latest most stable
version.

Hi all.
I don't really know which version of Winamp I installed onto my New Windows 10
computer. This is because, I don't yet know how to navigate my way around this
new OS yet.
Whatever I've installed must be wrong, for when I select a book of several
files, highlight them and press Enter, the first file starts playing, but the
audio is paused after about 5-10 minutes. I cannot even find my old favorate
"Play in Winamp", to start listening to the whole book.
Can anyone please tell me which version of Winamp I should have installed and
also if possible, where to download this. I've tried and there are dozens of
versions and download paths.
