Hi Mark,
I’d have to say that in the early days of mobile phones, some networks charged
for the 195 service and some provided the service free, until the regulatory
body Offcom put a stop to all charges on all networks.
Best,
Clive

what I do is I call from my mobile phone 195 and there is no charge. I den ask
if they will send me a text message with the number and they do this. I then
have the address plus the number. this works very well for me. I never use my
landline now to dial 195 directory.

Hi Mark,
If you mean the directory enquiry side of the service, the answer is never.
However, the operators have recently been asking if the caller would like them
to transfer the call to the number. As you can imagine, if you do, you’d pay
the normal fee for the call.
Caution: sometimes they will ask, sometimes not. It’s unpredictable. Often they
transfer the call without telling you the number. It’s not advisable for you to
let them do that, as you’d have to call again if the line is engaged, because
the agent doesn’t stay on the line. However, there have been times when I’ve
said: “Yes please, but first can you tell me the number”, and they’ve told me
the number and hung up. Other times they do as they have been asked. In my
honest opinion, I wish they’d stick to giving the number out, as I never know
what I’m going to get, a number, a transfer or both, and it feels a bit more
complex than it needs to be.
Best,
Clive
