Subject: [access-uk] Re: Wayfinder System
Also, Guide Dogs are trialling a similar system with Microsoft called Cities
Unlocked. There is a video somewhere out there demonstrating a day out for a
father and son and how this scheme could help them have a day out in London
dependently, i.e. the programme could enable you to buy your tickets for the
underground or the event you plan to see; the system would be intelligent
enough that when you arrive at the underground station it would tell you
which platform to go to or if the train had been delayed. When they go into
the museum, it read the notices on the exhibit cases etc. etc. I don't know
if this video is available on Guide Dog's website.
I'm going to a conference in September when I should learn how this research
is progressing.
The idea is that it would not just help sight impaired people, but would be
of use to anyone, for example, as you pass Boots, it could be advertising
"deals of the day" etc.
