That is interesting as the non-medical helper for the Open University has to come out of DSA. Now I do not wish to start a debate or otherwise I will be thrown off the list, but thanks for all contributions on the discussion

Hi Jackie,

Yes, that is right, DSA shouldn't come into it as the University has a duty
to provide these facilities.

John.

Assistance for disabled students

Hi John

Yes, that is exactly what happened in my case. I applied through UCAS, they picked up on my disabilities, then everything swung into action. I wouldn't swap my Specialist Campus Assistant for anybody, she's fantastic at her job
and great fun. And as far as the university itself is concerned, they've
all been incredibly helpful in providing assistance wherever possible and
making me feel a huge part of things, even though I can only do part-time
for health reasons.

I urge you Eleanor to speak with the Disabilities Support or whatever they
call themselves at your university, and find out how they might best assist you. Remember that I am not talking about DSA here at all, merely what the
university itself can offer.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Eleanor,

Apologies for butting in on your conversation with Jackie, but what you want
to ask of your University is whether they have a Disability Service within
the University. If they do, they should be able to set up a Student Support Plan (SSP) with you. They can either conduct an assessment at the University
or by telephone to discuss your needs.

John.

Well that is very interesting Jackie. I did have such an assistant but at
GNVQ level and not under Graduate level. Thanks for your reply.

Hi Eleanor

As far as I know, the Specialist Campus Assistant is provided by the
university, and not funded through DSA. Mine is called Bernie, and
she is absolutely fantastic. I go to university two days a week for
this Semester.
I am doing journalism part-time, and I truly love it at Ulster.
Bernie takes me everywhere. She helps me with scanning, reading,
taking notes, and is an absolute scream too which is why we have
already earned the title of being the Terrible Twins.

I had wanted to go full-time, but I am suffering so badly with my back
now that it is only possible to do so much at a time. The medication
is very potent, and makes me sleep quite a lot, so I've asked Bernie
to carry a knitting needle about with her so she can poke me when I
start to drift off.
(smile).

I must say that having a Specialist Campus Assistant makes life so
much easier as it takes the stress out of wondering where to go and
how to get there. Without Bernie, there would be no course, so
perhaps it is something you need to look into Eleanor as I don't know
if it is mandatory or down to the student to finance it. Certainly I
haven't been asked to.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

hi Jackie
I am thinking of moving to a brick university in the new year! Can you
tell me does your class-room assistant pay come out of your DSA? as
this will be a consideration of mine, with my non-medical helper
allowance somewhere in the region of four thousand a year.

Many thanks to all who have so far replied here. There are obviously
options to consider, so I will discuss with the lecturer concerned
what my best path might be. I just wanted to be armed with the
knowledge that there is access out there to some of the software he
may suggest, just to be prepared so to speak. I do receive DSA, so I
will discuss it with the great people at the university.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns
