Gordon and all: Sorry to be so late on this, had connectivity problems with my BB this week. I totally concur with all that Gordon says, however, the one thing which I find slightly irksome is that having pressed the "on" button, there is no indication to someone without any sight, if it is booting or not. I was going to go for the NC10 by Samsung as most blind people seem to have gone in that direction. However I already had a laptop near enough the size of the Samsung so I decided to investigate the Dell mini 9. It's small and fairly light, very much more easily carried. I can put it in a large pocket inside my anorak or fleece and carry it that way. It's probably fairly similar to most netbooks, working on a 1.6ghz processor - that's adequate but if you're used to faster desktops it can be a little sluggish. (same with most Netbooks I imagine). If you load it with a word processor and a few other programs it works well enough - it's also good at connecting to the Internet through hotspots, wireless networks, Vodafone broadband, etc. - it's geared for that. It is good for watching TV on if you stream it from the BBC website etc. The keys are smaller - I'm a touch typist and so it's straightforward enough. If you have standard or small fingers then touchtyping is cramped at first but you soon get used to it. It's worth the size of the keyboard for the size and weight benefit. The only drawback is not having Function Keys (at the top). You have to use a combination of the function key (beside the Windows key) and alt and the ASDF row. There's no F11 or F12 but there are ways round this I think. The hard drive is solid state - it's only 8GB - enough for the XP operating system and a few programs. This means there are no moving parts in the Netbook, no hard drive, to use some of that vital battery power. I've put a 16GB SD card into the slot and this caters for other programs to be loaded or for storage. Also with 3 USB2 slots there's the ability to use large storage drives. It's good - for standard usage. But I suspect that with all Netbooks they will not replace a good desktop or fast laptop. They're great for being on the move. Certainly having Vodafone broadband make it easy to get connected where there's no other wifi etc. HOpe this helps. I think Broadband has spoiled us and made us so impatient these days with less than broadband speed connections. You answered another question, what is the Del Mini like? Is the keypad very small and cramped? And what is general opinion of the netbook? In good 3G areas it works well. I'm going from memory here but I think it transfers at 456m/bits/sec or so.ON the higher band HPSA or something like that it's even faster. Once connected it's much better than direct dial, but not quite as fast as standard broadband. Still good for video and audio streaming however. I know it very much depends on the signal strength in the area, but what is the performance and accessibility like?
