Hi Andy

I wouldn't like to say whether or not an external soundcard would work on Vista, though surely there are drivers to support it by now. But the sound quality on my HP is so good that I just plug a lead from the hi-fi to it and away I go. Brill! (smile.)

For what I do, I'm not experiencing any problems on Vista, but it is fair to say, as posted previously, that anything like scanning and using Sound Forge is still done under XP because of the location of where the machines are at home. JAWS 9 certainly seems to be speaking ok under Vista too. Let's face it, all Operating Systems and screen readers have their quirks, but I can honestly say it's happening for me at the moment.

Hi Jackie.

I must say, after reading your message and the one from Tristram, I'm warming to Vista. However, I note that you attach your HP to your hi-fi. This is important as I use the Soundblaster Live external card to pump audio, via the optic out, to my AV unit. I'm not sure if the Soundblaster would work, nor Winamp or GoldWave, which I also use extensively. I also use the BBC Player for live and listen again programmes, so if VISTA can cope with these, then I may be in the market for a HP or PB VISTA desk-top.

Best wishes.

Andy.

Hi Andy

I can only give you my thoughts based on what I've used successfully under Vista.

My laptop, as you have probably read by now, is an HP with Vista Home Premium. On it, I primarily use Microsoft Word 2003, JAWS version 9.0 and all its patches, Outlook Express, or the Windows Mail equivalent, Skype, Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and Juice.

The laptop sits in our living-room, and is there so I can send and receive Emails, listen to music when I want to attach it to the hi-fi, and is cheaper to run all day than the desktop. (smile.)

As far as Vista goes, it does what I require of it at the moment. I haven't got any scanning packages on it because its purpose isn't for those just now. If I want to do all that, and use Sound Forge etc, I go to my XP machine which has a lot more software installed on it.

So, for me, Vista is fine and does a good job as it stands, and I have no qualms about recommending HP, either in a laptop or desktop flavour.

I hope this helps.

Jackie

Hi all.

I'm getting very closed to having to make a decision on a new computer and again, I am presented with a dilemma . Which OS to get!.

I just love XP Home but believe that this is not going to be supported after 2008, so I need to choose between VISTA, or XP Media Center computers.

I have JAWS Professional version 8 and intend to upgrade to version 9, so neither should present too many access issues for me.

I like Packard Bell computers and indeed, have purchased three of them in the past. I've been told that Hewlett Packard is another good brand, so I'll probably go for either of these.

I use my computer, quite a lot for recording BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio 2 shows as well as burning this material, using either Easy CD creator or Nero onto CD or DVD's . I also like to use a SoundBlaster External Sound Card, to attach my computer to an AV unit. Other items, such as the Zoom Recorder and Olympus DS50 as well as External Hard Drives, are all regular visitors to my computer.

I have been told that VISTA will not allow me to use many of these items, so if this is the case, then I'll go for the Media Center operating system.

Can anyone please let me know if any of my above tasks would be limited or prohibited by VISTA please.

Still very much seeking a recommendation from more experienced users into brand and type of computer.

Looking forward to a full in-box, hahaha.

Andy.
