Right, the same applies to WE 5.5, because if you are on the standard version,
this will work on Windows 98 or ME only, not Windows 2000, or any flavour of XP
be it home or professional.
I would email support@xxxxxxxxxxx with your serial number to check whether you
are on the standard or professional version, but I suspect you are using
standard which wouldn't help - if you upgraded to professional, you could
upgrade to either XP home (which is the better option) or professional (which
is more expensive).
In short - I really wouldn't bother to go down the road of Windows 2000 upgrade
- it really wouldn't benefit you.

Just to be 100% clear here.
If you were using the standard version of JAWS for example with Windows 98,
then you would need to upgrade to the Professional version of JAWS with Windows
2000.
JAWS standard will NOT work with WINDOWS 2000.

I think I am ok with my screen reader, it only seems to be with xp that
requires an expensive upgrade, and I am pretty sure all my hardware has win2000
drivers, so should work.

But 2000 Professional will still require the professional version of a
screen reader. You will also find there are just as many hardware issues.

I chose 2000pro precisely because of those hardware and screen reader
issues with xp, as I do not want any extra outlay for screen reader and
possibly hardware upgrades.

I guess the first question to ask is why install an operating system
which has reached the end of its life-cycle? Microsoft stopped supplying on
March 31st 2005.
Essentially Windows XP Professional is the current equivalent, and indeed
fixes many problems inherent in Windows 2000. But do you in fact need all the
security features of XP or even Windows 2000. XP Home itself is cheaper, and a
major improvement anyway.
The most important consideration is the hardware itself, so take a look
at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx, and be
prepared for even more research of the individual components such as CD
writers, etc. Check with the individual manufacturers to ensure their hardware
is up scratch.
Bear in mind that you may need to upgrade your screen reader, and in some
cases, it may be necessary to migrate to the professional version of that.

hello list,
I am thinking of changing my os to win2000pro, and would like to know the
following.
can I just install it over the current os, which is win98se, or do I have
to wipe the machine clear first?
is the installation strait forward?
are there any options I should change rather than just letting it go
ahead, to ensure better running of the machine?
any other pointers also would be welcome, as I haven't done anything like
this before, but win98 is starting to get on my nerves a bit.
