Hi Peter and all,

Peter, You're probably right in that view, but just a thought. With the new
regulations coming to play, and businesses slowly starting to acknowledge
that visually impaired customers actually do exist, and sometimes with just
a little tweak in their products they can be made accessible, there could be
in the future many products which are made accessible but not specialised.
So perhaps we should review the current VAT legislations to include these
products? The talking microwaves and the talking alarm clocks spring to mind
as examples. Actually, do you have to pay VAT on the talking microwave? Something for the parliament to think about, ha?! I for myself
will stick with the rule don't ask don't tell for now! <Smile>

Cheers,

I thought we were VAT exempt only for products specifically made for the
blind. As someone else pointed out, this particular watch is not
specifically for visually impaired people.

Hi Scott,

I bought mine from the RNIB, where they have details.

It can be bought slightly cheaper via mail order from abroad, but then
you
do get the difficulties mentioned earlier re guarantees, repairs etc.
Also,
remember that as a blind person the RNIB does not impose the VAT that you
may need to add in other countries.

Well Graham, you've got a point, however, remember that you're paying
for a quality Swiss watch made by Tissot, a well established
manufacturer in this industry. As well, this Tissot Silent model
isn't specifically made for VI users. The idea behind it is to be
able to check the time without people around you noticing and as it
happens we can benefit from this touch crystal technology. To my
knowledge no other watch makers are using this technology which's,
IMHO, a very clever idea as it can offer you the functionality of a
digital watch while maintaining the elegant classic look of an
analogue watch. And to be fair, Tissot has models which are quite
more expensive than the Tissot Silent; take for instance the Tissot
Touch
models.

The main point is that Tissot produced a mainstream product with added functionality which brings us to a same playing field level with the sighted user, and I think that's a very good practice and just hope other businesses would start following this approach.

After all, we can now enjoy this discussion rather than living in a
world where you have to take what you're given and be thankful.

You can tell that I'm very passionate about this watch can't you?!
*Smile*

Just my two pence worth.

and at that price it wants to be elegant as well. preferably it
should make the tea, cook the dinner and clean the house as well!

For something that is just a time piece I would need some convincing
that this is anything but an extreme con.

I am in to Braille and use things like the Braillenote which is
certainly extremely expensive because, though cheaper in real terms
than a few years ago, Braille cell technology is still expensive.
but unless you are heavily into sport and need a watch that stands a
good chance of survival in water, or you earn wages typical of a top
end premiership footballer, this price would probably deter most
would-be buyers especially when braille watches are still available
for a quoarter of the price.

Cheers

Hi Darran and all,

The watch is grate. Accurate, elegant and water proof. However, one
thing is good to be aware of, Tissot, the company, functions as
franchise manufacturers. So if you ever need to fix your watch the
dealer would have to get the parts from the country you bought it
from, and that clearly takes more time. Further more, even with an
international warranty, the dealer here in the UK wouldn't be able
to replace the watch for you if needed because it will be a none UK
model. While when you buy it from here obviously all British sales
regulations apply. I'm talking from a first hand experience. Having
said that, I don't know if the States' models are the same as the UK
models. You could find more about this matter from a Tissot dealer.

HTH,

Hello to Tissot watch users out there.

I'm thinking about buying one of these watches, and was just after
a little feedback from those who've already taken the plunge.

Are you all happy with the watch, or have you discovered things
that you don't like or just can't get along with?

Many thanks.

Darran
