Be aware though of the following:
1. You'll be running something to the effect of Windows XP.
2. protected browsing will be automatically turned off and can't be turned on, even if the option is available. Protected browsing separates IE from the Windows shell, and also prevents downloading malicious content by approving your request first.
This is a warning only; not to discourage you from turning off UAC.

Thanks, Chris. Just as I thought. I may have to do the same as Jill and turn it off completely, as it's rather annoying to be constantly asked about whether you want something to run or not. It seems like a bit of an oversight on Microsoft's part that you can't exclude trusted applications from its clutches.

Caroline.

You can't do this. Windows 7 will allow you to refine it in some way, but not on an application-specific level. You can, however, adjust it so that it won't bother you with Windows-based programs but will with third-party ones. This is the default setting.

Subject: [access-uk] User Account Control Irritations

Hello,

On my Vista laptop I have user account control activated, and while I don't really want to turn it off permanently, I would like to be able to refine it so that I can allow some programs, such as Juice and Winamp, to go through automatically without asking me for permission every time I want to run either of them.

I have looked in Control Panel but it seems that the only option is to have UAC on or off and that it isn't configurable. Can anyone confirm whether this is actually the case, or have I just missed something?

Thanks,

Caroline.
