Chris,

Which step do you mean?

The eejection, the finalising?

I'll go with finalising just in case.

Finalising or to put it another way, "closing off a disk" is very basically telling the computer you're done with this disc and don't require writing any more data on it.

It also ensures that the disc will play in other windows computers. To not finalise it tells your computer I'm not done with this so please don't allow it to be played in other machines.

It also helps to finalise the writing process, as this ensures that every step is taken as to not make a coaster. This is a common term for a disc that didn't burn correctly. Hence it's only use now is as a funky coaster to set your coffee on to prevent your table from having mug marks.

Subject: [access-uk] Urgent help with UltraIso

Hi all,
My friend's burning her first CD using UltraIso. Everything went well until she decided to eject it, as she thought it wasn't doing anything even though it was waiting to finalize. As a result UltraIso appears to not burn anything now. I'm hoping a reboot of the system will help, but if someone could just explain to her why this is such an important step in CD burning, in simple English, it would really help her. Thanks in advance.
